Where Fort Delimara stands

Fort Delimara stands on the coast at Delimara Point, on the southern side of Marsaxlokk Harbour. The peninsula’s position made it part of a defensive ring guarding the harbour, alongside Fort Tas-Silġ, Fort San Luċjan and Fort Bengħajsa.

Its listed address is Fort Delimara, Delimara Road, Marsaxlokk, Malta, placing it outside Marsaskala and at the end of the peninsula.

How do you get from Marsaskala to Fort Delimara?

Driving is the straightforward option described by the available travel details: Fort Delimara is about a 17-minute drive from Cerviola Hotel. The listing does not give a specific road route from Marsaskala or details about restrictions on the final approach, so check the official site before you go.

Public transport involves a walk at the Marsaxlokk end. Heritage Malta places the closest bus stop in Marsaxlokk, about 3 km from the fort, and describes the walk from the stop as about 30 minutes. Check current transport details before travelling, and allow for the walk if you use the bus.

The fort and its historical setting

The fort and its historical setting

Fort Delimara was built between 1876 and 1878, and its main gate was completed in 1881. Heritage Malta identifies it as part of the wider defence system around Marsaxlokk Harbour.

The fort originally held six 38-ton RML guns. Four remain in place; Heritage Malta describes them as the last examples in the world still standing on their original carriages and platforms. During the Second World War, the fort came under enemy air attack and fired its guns against mine-laying operations.

After 1945, it continued in use until coastal defence across the British Empire was abolished in 1956. Following Malta’s Independence on 21 September 1964, the fort was transferred to the local government.

Access, opening and visiting conditions

Access, opening and visiting conditions

Fort Delimara is not generally open for casual drop-in visits: Heritage Malta lists it as temporarily closed and says public access is by request through a pre-booked curator’s tour. The listing gives no regular public opening schedule or ticket price, so arrange access in advance rather than arriving at the entrance.

The site is partially accessible, and some areas cannot be fully accessed by people with mobility impairment. If access requirements matter to your visit, ask Heritage Malta about the tour and areas available before booking.

Before you go: Heritage Malta publishes the fort’s visitor access information; check the official site before you go.
